Chilterns contemporary cottage garden

Location: Flamstead, Hertfordshire.

Client brief: Create a series of garden spaces for entertainment, relaxation, play and growing vegetables on a steeply sloping site.

Site: 8m x 40m (320sqm) rear garden. Large lawn area with established borders. Slope challenges. Need for large scale excavations to create flat areas.

Design concept: Extending the modern & contemporary home interior into the garden to deliver a coherent whole. Making the garden an additional room for entertainment and relaxation. The owners were keen gardeners and the design features extensive low maintenance planting which delivers year round interest. A design which is grounded in the local Chilterns heritage landscape.

  • Entertainment Terrace

    Large format porcelain tiles across merge the orangery and garden together in a seamless entertainment space featuring bespoke furniture and cooking facilities.

  • Immersive Planting

    Terraced planting borders delivering colourful and fragrant impact rise from the edge of the entertainment terrace. A gravel path winds past the feature Bramley Apple tree with deep borders of partial shade loving perennials, ferns and grasses.

  • Into the Evening

    Cleverly thought through LED lighting delivers mood and atmosphere well into the evening. In-planting lighting creates beautiful effects and shadows.
